St. John's Reefs: A Deep Dive into Egypt's Far South
At the very bottom of the Egyptian Red Sea, only a short distance from the maritime border with Sudan, lies a scattered complex of reefs known collectively as St. John's. There are no resorts here and no jetties to step off; the nearest town is far to the north. Divers reach these reefs almost exclusively aboard liveaboards, and the remoteness is precisely the point. The water is clear, the reefs are healthy, and the mix of shallow coral gardens, narrow caves and exposed pinnacles gives the area a reputation as one of the finest stretches of diving in Egypt.
Where the reefs lie
St. John's is not a single reef but a broad group of formations spread across open water in the deep south of the Egyptian Red Sea. The area sits offshore rather than fringing the coast, which is why it stayed comparatively untouched for so long. Because it lies close to the border, this is genuinely the last diveable ground before Sudanese waters begin. Reefs here take several forms. Some break the surface as low sandy cays, others rise as rounded coral platforms, and a number never quite reach the top at all. Reaching the far south
Distance shapes every trip to St. John's. Boats typically set out from ports on the southern Egyptian coast and steam south for many hours, so itineraries are usually built as multi-day liveaboard voyages rather than day excursions. This commitment filters the diving population, and it means the reefs see far fewer fins than the busy sites further north. The trade-off is real self-sufficiency: everything you dive with, eat and sleep on travels with the boat. In return you get early-morning descents with almost no other divers in the water, and the sense of exploring reefs that still feel wild.
The caves and swim-throughs
If St. John's has a signature, it is the labyrinth of caverns and swim-throughs woven through its shallower reefs. In the coral bommies of the region, the limestone has been sculpted into interconnected chambers, tunnels and vertical shafts. On a bright day, sunlight pours down through gaps in the reef roof and breaks into shifting columns of blue and gold light, an effect that gives these passages their cathedral-like reputation. The best-known cave systems stay relatively shallow, which makes them accessible and allows long, unhurried exploration. Because the passages twist and branch, they demand good buoyancy and a calm approach; kicking up sediment or bumping the walls spoils both the visibility and the fragile growth clinging to the rock. A guide who knows the routes is invaluable, and many divers rate drifting through these light-filled corridors as the highlight of the whole trip. It pays to move slowly and let your eyes adjust to the half-light, because much of the smaller life hides in the shadows along the walls. A torch helps bring out the colour of the coral where daylight cannot reach, though the most experienced divers often switch it off for a while and let the natural shafts of light guide them back toward the opening instead.
Coral gardens and pinnacles
Beyond the caves, St. John's is above all a coral destination. The shallow plateaus are carpeted with hard corals in tightly packed formations, while the walls and pinnacles are draped in soft corals and sea fans that thrive in the current-fed water. Gorgonian fans reach out into the flow to feed, and the sheer density of growth on some of the pillars is striking. Sites built around isolated pinnacles are particularly memorable, because the reef rises like a tower from deeper water and can be circled completely, with the wall dropping away on every side. These pinnacles concentrate life: schooling reef fish wrap around them, anthias shimmer above the coral, and predators patrol the edges where the reef meets open water.
Life in the blue
The exposed, offshore character of St. John's is what draws in larger animals. Reefs that sit out in open water and catch the current tend to attract pelagic species, and the southern reefs are known for encounters with sharks patrolling the deeper edges and the blue beyond the wall. Grey reef sharks are among the animals divers hope to see, and the region has a wider reputation for open-water species that move through with the seasons. Turtles graze the coral flats, large schools of snapper and barracuda gather over the plateaus, and pods of dolphins are sometimes met in the surrounding water. Nothing is guaranteed, which is part of the appeal; the diving rewards patience and attention to the blue as much as to the reef itself. A seasoned diver therefore splits their attention, one eye on the coral and the other turned outward toward the open expanse, because it is often in the borderland between reef and deep water that the biggest encounters unfold.
Conditions and seasons
Diving St. John's means diving in the open sea, and conditions vary accordingly. The offshore reefs are exposed to current, and while gentle flow is what feeds the soft corals and brings in the bigger fish, some sites can run strong and are best treated as drift dives. Surface conditions depend on the wind, and the crossing to and from the reefs can be lively. Visibility is generally excellent thanks to the clear, open water. Water temperatures follow the Red Sea's seasonal rhythm, cooler in the northern-hemisphere winter and warmest in late summer, so divers plan exposure protection around the time of year. Liveaboards running the southern routes tend to operate through the warmer months, and many divers choose the shoulder seasons for a balance of comfortable water and calmer seas. As always, local conditions on the day decide which sites a crew can safely reach.
Diving responsibly
The health of St. John's is tied directly to how lightly divers tread. These reefs have stayed in good condition partly because they are hard to reach and receive limited traffic, but that also makes them vulnerable to careless behaviour. Excellent buoyancy control is essential, especially inside the caves and among the dense coral, where a single misplaced fin can undo years of slow growth. Divers should keep well clear of the reef, avoid touching or resting on coral, and take care not to stir up sediment in the enclosed passages. Because the area is remote, self-sufficiency and conservative planning matter more than usual; help is far away, and the sensible approach is to dive within comfortable limits and let the guides set the pace. Treated with respect, these reefs offer an experience that feels increasingly rare: coral that is genuinely thriving.
